Leonista: A Spirit of the Desert

Leonista: A spirit inspired by the desert, for the people of the desert.

The inspiration for Leonista began with a desire to create a unique gift for Africa Burn. My first experience at the event was so inspiring, filled with creativity and generosity, that I wanted to give something special in return at my second burn. Knowing that agave thrives in the Karoo, the idea of crafting a "spirit made from the desert for the people of the desert" took root. I started with a 50Ltr potstill in my garage and created the logo for the first brand. The name? "Barbarellas Bitchin Brew"—quite a name! The spirit was shared in small vials, hung around the neck for an energy boost, and in old wine bottles for larger gatherings.

The overwhelmingly positive responses and feedback helped embed the idea and fueled me to go to Mexico, learn from the maestro distillers and launch Leonista in November 2017.
