Leonista is the first 100% Karoo agave spirit in South Africa, made in the traditional Mexican way.

Proudly African, we are on a mission to bring quality products from Africa to the world, while conserving it's wild places.

"Leonista" means "Lioness energy".

Sarah, our Chief Lioness, who is passionate about the power of the agave plant, quality products, and conservation, was inspired by the tradition & industry in Mexico, and saw the opportunity to bring these qualities back to the Karoo in South Africa.

She embarked on a research tour in Mexico, where she learned the craft from maestro distillers. She fell in love with the spirit, believing that 100% agave spirits, when enjoyed responsibly, provide an energizing effect and don’t cause hangovers. 

Leonista's production process follows an age-old Mexican recipe used to craft agave spirits like Mezcal. The agave plant is cooked over smoke and fire, giving Leonista its signature smoky flavor, reminiscent of Mezcal. 

Our locally crafted agave spirit is made from South African Karoo agave that has thrived in the region for centuries.

Since it is not produced in Mexico, it cannot be called Mezcal or Tequila.
