Proudly South African freelance actress Amalia Uys has been one of Leonista’s Lionesses since day one. Amalia is no stranger to the essence of big cats, thanks to her and her husband Shaun’s beautiful kitty named Yoyo – who is a tiger at heart.
A world-class actress with a bubbly and vibrant spirit - her ability to completely immerse herself in her passion is what we love most about her. That, and the fact that she is one of the most down-to-earth beings we know, despite all of her accomplishments.
When asked what she is currently cheersing to, Amalia responded: “To pushing my own limits, and overcoming fears and limiting beliefs about myself on a personal level. As well as to human resilience, on a more global scale.”
And when asked what she can be found cheersing with: “We love the Honey Reposado with some kombucha and, obviously, some good old-fashioned Margaritas! My all-time favourite cocktail! The smokey flavour in Leonista makes this drink such a pleasure to pair with food as well. There are so many different flavour profiles to be enjoyed during all seasons of the year. Really so yummy!”
When she isn’t busy acting or presenting, Amalia can also be found dabbling in producing or directing. Both fields which she aims to explore further as she looks to her future. Otherwise, she’s a devout yogi, stemming from her background in ballet, and she loves horse riding, pole dancing and trail running. “I suppose it’s good that we are quite active, as we also adore food and cooking, and love playing around with interesting flavours in the kitchen,” she adds.
Amalia and Shaun are both ocean lovers, so morning sea swims are a regular occurrence in their household. Even in the midst of winter, sans wetsuits – My Octopus Teacher style.
Amalia’s approach to life is directly guided by her values: authenticity, abundance, balance, beauty, community and truth. “Times are tough, but I do believe that every day brings some sort of gift or opportunity. It just depends on your perspective. Investigating and understanding human existence drives my insatiable passion for storytelling and I am just grateful that I can be a part of this crazy thing called life!” she says.
“A quote that really resonates with me is this one by Rob Siltanen: ‘Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things, they push the human race forward. And while some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.’”
To her friends, Amalia is the one you can count on to keep everybody laughing, through the best and the worst of times. “Because of my red hair, I’m often seen as the ‘crazy’ one, and I can definitely be this person, but I’m also prone to being very serious and philosophical about life. I suppose this is where balance comes in: To delve deeply and ask questions, but also allow yourself to occasionally just get suspended in the absurdity of it all!”
We dig Amalia for her multi-faceted and positive approach to life. Nothing feels more fitting than to have her flying the Leonista flag for us. Cheers Amalia!
